BINTANGOR: Some 400 headmen and longhouse folk attended a luncheon on Friday hosted by the Meradong District Longhouse Headmen’s Association (PTTR) to show their support for United People’s Party (UPP) proposed candidate for Meradong James Wong Hua Kiong.
Association chairman Rantie Ayai, who was accompanied by secretary Ngipa Andieng and treasurer Minggu Jumat, told reporters they hoped Wong would be Barisan Nasional’s (BN) choice to wrest the seat back from the opposition.
He said they fully supported Wong and the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
The headmen and longhouse folk were from various areas in the constituency such as Ulu Strass, Nangga Strass, Ulu Binatang, Jalan Lasi, Lemayong, Mador, Tulai and Ming Tee.
Also present were local Chinese community leaders and Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Meradong members.
Meanwhile, Wong said BN stands a good chance to win back the seat as many who had supported the opposition in the last election have realised
that they have not gained anything, while the Chinese community also supported Adenan’s leadership, particularly the attention he has paid to Chinese education development.
