Attacks by hackers serve as lesson for all, says Abg Jo

KUCHING: Attacks by hackers on several official government websites serve as a lessons to the Malaysian Government to better safeguard its digital records from possible attacks in the future.
Tourism and Heritage Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the attacks had destroyed important digital records which took years to compile.

“The attack is a lesson to us that we need to be more prepared to face hackers who want to destroy our digital information for whatever purposes,” he said at a welcoming dinner for delegates attending the InterPARES3 Project summit and symposium here on Friday.
Johari said the summit and symposium came at the right time and he urged delegates, during their deliberations, to find means to address such attacks by hackers.

He said the state government through Sarawak State Library would work with other record and archive administrators to ensure that the state would keep up with current global initiatives in records and archives administration.
“Such initiatives are important in ensuring administrative continuities and to ensure that the state government has the long-term interest of the people at heart,” he said.
The International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems (InterPARES) is an international collaborative endeavour composed of several regional, national and multinational teams and Malaysia is a member.

InterPARES3 project will translate the theory and methods of digital preservation developed into concrete action plans for existing bodies of records that are to be kept over the long term by archives and archival / record unites within organisations, endowed with limited resources.
The three-day InterPARES summit and symposium, which ended yesterday, was held in collaboration with the state government, Pustaka and University Technology Mara.
It was attended by delegates from Canada, Italy, Brazil, Turkey, China, South Korea, Africa and Malaysia.
