SERIAN: There are 15 locations identified as landslide risk areas along the Pan-Borneo Highway with most of them in the lower region of Sarawak, namely Sri Aman and Sarikei.
Though the Works Ministry is monitoring closely the situation of these areas especially during the monsoon season, the landslip that took place at Km77 Kuching-Serian road was unexpected.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng said the stretch was not listed among the 15 areas.
"We will study the situation on the 1,357km highway.
"This stretch is not located near slopes and it (landslip) should not have happened," Yong said when met at the site of the incident near Kampung Semukoi yesterday.
On Wednesday, a 100m stretch sank nearly three metres deep. No casualties were reported.
Traffic coming from Kuching and Sri Aman was disrupted and diverted to the 36km Mentong/Muram estate road causing a massive 10km congestion here.
