KUCHING: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has identified five out of its seven parliamentary candidates to contest in the next general election.
Its president Datuk Seri Peter Chin said they were still identifying qualified candidates for the two other parliamentary seats.
“We would present our suggestions to the Barisan Nasional leadership for them to decide.
“The candidates whom we have identified are all winnable. And the SUPP president, I want to lead a team that can win and we will do our very best,” said Chin to reporters after chairing his first SUPP central committee meeting since elected as its president last month.
In the 2008 general election, SUPP won six parliamentary seats - Serian, Sarikei, Miri, Sibu, Lanang and Stampin - and lost to DAP in Bandar Kuching.
However, it lost Sibu in a by-election in 2010 following the demise of incumbent Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew.
Chin, who is also the Water, Green Technology and Energy Minister, said there was a need to transform SUPP to gather to support of the people.
“We want to transform SUPP as soon as possible. If we are successful, the public will accept us.”
