KUCHING: Transformation pursued aggressively might not always yield the desired results, said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at the closing of the International Youth Cultural Conference at Damai Puri Resort near here yesterday.
Acknowledging the people’s demand for change and a better future, he was worried that a radical crusade would cause society to move backwards instead of forward.
“Many young people want to change the world for the better. Some are not so organised while others are through non-governmental organisations fighting for human rights, good environment and a clean government.
“These are laudable objectives but may not give immediate desired results so the movement is getting aggressive with much confrontation. We must therefore find out how the demand for change can be met.”
Sharing his insight with 180 youths from 13 countries who participated in the three-day conference, Taib said when he was young, he was idealistic and thought governments would subscribe to new ideas. But after years of being in politics, he realised a pragmatic approach should be adopted to better deal with issues.
Taib, who is also chairman of the Sarawak Unity Foundation board of trustees, told youths there was no one solution to the same problem in different countries but in Sarawak, the culture of the 27 ethnic groups must be taken into account when planning.
The first International Youth Cultural Conference held at Sarawak Cultural Village was jointly organised by Sarawak Unity Foundation and Sarawak Development Institute (SDI).
It provides a platform for youths to share their thoughts on culture and expose Sarawak youths to peer culture activities regionally and globally.
Also present were Taib’s wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and SDI chief executive officer Datu Aloysius J Dris.]
